Did You Know That Baking Soda Can Restore Shine to Dull-Looking Skin?

  • by

Baking soda is a common household ingredient that has found its way into many DIY beauty routines. Because it has a fine texture, some people use it as a gentle-looking exfoliant to help remove surface buildup and leave the skin feeling smoother.

However, baking soda is not a proven anti-aging treatment, and using too much or applying it too often can irritate the skin. If you want to try it, a very mild mixture and limited contact time are important.

A Simple Baking Soda Skin Mask

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon plain, unsweetened yogurt
  • ⅛ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon finely ground oatmeal
  • ½ teaspoon honey, optional

Step 1: Prepare the Bowl

Use a clean, small bowl and add one tablespoon of plain yogurt.

Yogurt creates a creamy base that makes the mixture easier to spread.

Step 2: Add the Oatmeal

Add one teaspoon of finely ground oatmeal and mix well.

Oatmeal is commonly used in gentle skincare preparations because it can help the skin feel soft and comfortable.

Step 3: Add a Very Small Amount of Baking Soda

Add ⅛ teaspoon of baking soda.

Don’t use a large spoonful. More baking soda does not mean better results and may increase the chance of dryness or irritation.

Step 4: Mix Thoroughly

Stir everything together until you have a smooth paste.

If the mixture seems too thick, add a few drops of water.

Step 5: Perform a Patch Test

Before applying the mask to your face, place a small amount on a discreet area of skin.

Wait and observe for irritation.

If you experience burning, significant redness, itching, or swelling, rinse it off and don’t use the mixture on your face.

Step 6: Clean Your Face

Wash your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser.

Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

Step 7: Apply the Mask

Spread a very thin layer over the face.

Avoid the eyelids, lips, and the delicate skin immediately surrounding the eyes.

Never apply it to broken, sunburned, irritated, or freshly shaved skin.

Step 8: Leave It on Briefly

For the first application, leave it on for approximately 3–5 minutes.

Do not scrub aggressively while it is on your skin.

If you experience burning or strong stinging, remove it immediately.

Step 9: Rinse

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Use your fingertips gently rather than rubbing the skin.

Step 10: Moisturize

Finish with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.

If you’re going outside during the day, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen as well.

Can Baking Soda Remove Wrinkles and Dark Spots?

Baking soda cannot reliably erase wrinkles or remove pigmentation in a few days.

It may temporarily make skin feel smoother by removing some surface buildup, but excessive use can damage the skin barrier and make dryness and irritation more noticeable.

For persistent dark spots, sun protection is particularly important. Ingredients such as niacinamide, vitamin C, azelaic acid, or retinoids may be more appropriate depending on the cause of the pigmentation and your skin type.

What About Dark Circles?

Baking soda should not be applied close to the eyes.

Dark circles can have several causes, including genetics, pigmentation, allergies, visible blood vessels, and facial anatomy. A kitchen ingredient cannot reliably eliminate all of these causes.

How Often Should You Use It?

Because baking soda can be irritating, don’t use this mask daily.

If your skin becomes dry, tight, red, itchy, or starts peeling, stop using it.

For everyday skin health, a simple routine of gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and daily sunscreen is generally more useful than repeatedly applying DIY exfoliating mixtures.

Final Thoughts

Baking soda may be an inexpensive ingredient for occasional DIY skincare, but more is not better. It should not be promoted as a treatment that makes someone look decades younger or removes wrinkles and dark spots in three days.

Used cautiously, a mild homemade mask may leave the skin feeling temporarily smoother and refreshed—but protecting the skin barrier and using proven skincare ingredients are much more reliable ways to maintain healthy-looking skin.
