Papaya is a delicious tropical fruit, and its small black seeds are often discarded without a second thought. However, papaya seeds have a peppery flavor and contain various plant compounds that have attracted interest in traditional food practices and scientific research.
They are sometimes promoted online as a natural way to “eliminate parasites” or “rejuvenate the body.” These claims are much stronger than the available evidence. Papaya seeds should not be considered a proven parasite treatment, and there is no established number of seeds that can safely or effectively eliminate intestinal worms in adults.
If you enjoy their flavor, a small amount can be incorporated into food as an occasional ingredient.
How to Prepare Papaya Seeds
Ingredients
- 1 ripe papaya
- A small amount of fresh papaya seeds
- Optional: lemon juice
- Optional: fruit, yogurt, or a salad
Step 1: Remove the seeds
Cut the papaya in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to scoop out the black seeds and place them in a bowl.
Step 2: Wash them
Rinse the seeds thoroughly under clean running water to remove the surrounding papaya pulp.
Step 3: Dry the seeds
Spread the seeds on a clean towel or plate and allow them to dry. You can also gently pat them dry.
Step 4: Use a small amount
Papaya seeds have a strong, peppery flavor, so there is no need to use a large quantity. Sprinkle a small amount over a fruit salad or blend a few into a smoothie.
Step 5: Store the remainder
If you want to keep the seeds, dry them thoroughly and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for short-term use.
