A wealthy widower living in a retirement home asked me to marry him – After his funeral, his lawyer handed me an envelope, saying, « The truth inside may be hard to accept. »

« What am I reading? »

« That’s impossible. Arthur was a resident here, just like me. »

“No,” Mr. Vance said softly. “Arthur bought this place eleven years ago. He never told the staff. He lived in the penthouse like a regular resident so no one would treat him differently.”

« Why would he have hidden something like that? »

« Because he wanted to know who was being kind to him, for his own good, » Mr. Vance replied. « And because he wanted to protect the people in the state-funded wing. The ones the world forgets. »

« It’s impossible. »

Then a voice rang out from the doorway.

« He had noticed you in the courtyard for weeks before finally finding the courage to speak to you. »

I turned around and saw Evelyn standing there.

« Evelyn, what are you doing here? »

« I came to tell you the truth myself. I owe you that much. »

She went in and closed the door behind her.

« I owe you that much. »

« My father asked me to help him. In secret. He knew Gregory was planning something terrible. »

« Prepare what? Just tell me clearly. I’m too old for riddles. »

“Gregory wanted to demolish the public wing,” she said. “He had architects, investors, everything was ready. He was going to evict all the residents and build luxury apartments on the site.”

The cruelty of it all enveloped me like an icy fog.

« All these people who have nowhere else to go. »

« I’m too old for riddles. »

« He didn’t care, » Evelyn said. « My father found out, and it broke his heart. »

Mr. Vance nodded slowly.

« Arthur couldn’t just promise you the property in a will. Gregory would have contested it, it would have dragged on in court for years. So he created this trust to keep it out of Gregory’s reach. »

I put a hand to my mouth, tears rising involuntarily.

« I just thought I was doing him a favor. I thought I was protecting a lonely friend. »

« My father discovered it, »

« That’s what you were doing, » she said. « And he, too, was protecting you and hundreds of others in return. »

I looked at the papers again.

« Why did you help him, Evelyn? Gregory is your brother. »

She lowered her eyes.

« Because I was ashamed. For years, I remained silent while Gregory mistreated our father. I told myself it was none of my business. But when I saw what he planned to do, I could no longer remain silent. »

« And he was protecting you. »

« Everything your husband built now belongs to you, » said Vance.

« I’m just a poor woman, Mr. Vance. I don’t know how to fight against men like Gregory. He has lawyers, money, and power. »

« You have something stronger, » he said. « You have the law on your side, and you have the truth. »

Evelyn knelt beside my chair and took my trembling hands.

« You are not alone anymore. I will be by your side. Mr. Vance too. »

« I don’t know how to fight against men like Gregory. »

I felt something harden inside me.

Because I knew, with a sinister certainty, that Gregory would come.

And this time, I would be ready to face him.

***

The penthouse doors opened abruptly.

Gregory burst in, flanked by his lawyers.

He threw a folded eviction notice onto the table.

I would be ready to face him.

« Pack your bags, old woman. As the eldest son, the inheritance is mine. I’ve filed my claim, and this apartment now belongs to the family. »

I didn’t move.

Next to me, Mr. Vance opened his briefcase.

Evelyn stepped forward from the balcony.

« Sit down, Gregory, » she said softly.

« Pack your bags, old woman. »

« I don’t take orders from you. »

I slid the deed of ownership towards him on the polished table.

« I think you should read this before saying anything else. »

Gregory grabbed the papers.

His eyes scanned the lines at lightning speed, and he turned pale.

« It’s a fake. Dad would never do that. »

« I don’t take orders from you. »

« Your father owned this entire establishment, » replied Mr. Vance. « His widow is now the sole owner. Your claim is worthless. »

« You manipulated a man on his deathbed, » Gregory shouted, pointing his finger at me.

“No,” said Evelyn. “I helped him. I signed the transfer myself, in front of witnesses. He knew exactly what you were planning to do with the public wing.”

Gregory turned to his sister, his voice breaking with rage.

« You manipulated a man on his deathbed. »

« You acted behind my back. »

« Someone had to do it, » she replied.

Mr. Vance closed his briefcase with a slight click.

« You have nothing left here. »

Gregory looked at the lawyers who were now squirming uncomfortably.

« You’ll regret it, » he muttered.

« You acted behind my back. »

« I doubt it, » I said.

He left without saying a word.

A few weeks later, I stood by the window overlooking the courtyard, watching the workers repair the wing of the building that was falling into ruin.

A warm light finally illuminated the rooms where I used to shiver.

« Arthur, » I whispered, « your dream is safe now. »

And for the first time in years, I felt at home.

He left without saying a word.
