Attention: These Skin Changes Should Not Be Ignored

  • by

Small bumps, pustules, redness, sores, or unusual changes around the groin, thighs, genitals, or mouth can have many different causes. Although images circulating online may suggest that these are the “first signs” of one particular disease, a photograph alone cannot provide a reliable diagnosis.

Some common possibilities include irritated or infected hair follicles, ingrown hairs, acne-like inflammation, contact dermatitis, fungal infections, and other skin conditions. Certain sexually transmitted infections can also cause sores, blisters, ulcers, or bumps, so new lesions in the genital or oral area deserve appropriate medical evaluation.

One important warning sign is a painful or rapidly worsening lesion, especially if it becomes filled with pus, develops significant redness or swelling, or is accompanied by fever. Recurrent painful lumps in the groin or armpits can also require evaluation for conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly scratch pustules or sores. This can worsen inflammation, introduce bacteria, cause scarring, and potentially spread an infection to nearby skin.
