What such images reveal about our perception

Our brain doesn’t process visual information like a camera that records every detail in a completely neutral way. It constantly interprets, sorts, and simplifies.

This ability is extremely helpful in everyday life. It allows us to quickly recognize what is in front of us without having to consciously analyze every single detail.

However, in a picture puzzle, this very efficiency can lead to us overlooking a shape or initially perceiving several similar objects as a group belonging together.

Attention changes the outcome

Those who only look at the picture for a few seconds tend to focus more on the overall impression. Those who consciously take their time, however, can systematically separate the individual tomatoes from one another.

Therefore, the same person can arrive at different answers on the first and second attempt. It’s not the number of tomatoes that has changed, but rather the attention with which the image is viewed.

Why we lose track when counting

A typical problem arises when the gaze briefly wanders after counting a few tomatoes. The brain then has to reconstruct where the counting was interrupted.

Counting nearly identical red fruits is more difficult than counting objects with different colors or shapes. It’s easy to accidentally count a tomato again or omit it entirely.

Therefore, fixed starting points and a consistent direction are particularly helpful in such puzzles.

Quick estimation and accurate counting are not the same thing.

When we see a small quantity, we can sometimes immediately tell how many objects are present. With larger and densely grouped quantities, however, we often have to estimate first.

This estimate can be surprisingly close to the actual number, but it doesn’t have to be exact. The difference between 12 and 13, in particular, is small enough to easily go unnoticed at first glance.

Why such puzzles are popular on social networks

The task is immediately understandable. No instructions or special prior knowledge are required. A picture and a simple question are all it takes: « 12 or 13? »

At the same time, conversation automatically arises as soon as two people give different results. Everyone wants to recount and find out where the discrepancy occurred.

This turns a simple counting task into a small, shared game.

What’s particularly interesting is that different viewers often start in different places. Some people focus on the center first, others automatically on the edge.

The order in which the eyes scan an image also varies from person to person. This means that a detail might be immediately noticeable to one person, while another might only notice it on the second or third viewing.

However, this doesn’t mean that a simple tomato puzzle could reliably measure intelligence, eyesight, or medical skill. It’s primarily an entertaining game that tests attention and perception.

No medical eye test

Even though such posts are often described as an « eye test, » the puzzle is of course no substitute for an eye exam. A single incorrect count does not automatically mean there is something wrong with your eyes.

Image size, screen brightness, resolution, overlaps, and concentration can all affect the result. Therefore, anyone experiencing vision problems should not judge themselves based on an internet image.

Try the test a second time.

Once you have decided on your first answer, look away for a moment. Then start again from a different part of the picture.

If you counted clockwise first, try counting in the opposite direction this time. Do both results match?

If you arrive at a different number on the second pass, specifically look for the point where the counts differ.
