- Make the roux:
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for about 1–2 minutes. - Add the broth:
Slowly pour in the broth while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. - Add the milk:
Pour in the milk and continue stirring. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. - Season the gravy:
Add salt, black pepper, and, if desired, onion powder and garlic powder. Continue cooking for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy becomes smooth and thick. - Toast the bread:
Lightly toast the bread if you like a little texture, or leave it soft for the traditional comforting version. - Pour generously:
Place the bread on a plate and ladle the hot gravy over the top, making sure it soaks into the bread. - Serve immediately:
Add another sprinkle of black pepper on top and enjoy while warm.
This is the kind of recipe that doesn’t need fancy ingredients—it is simple, inexpensive, filling, and full of memories. Sometimes a piece of bread covered in good gravy really can be the best part of the meal.
