  • by

Homemade Pumpkin Puree is one of the most versatile ingredients to prepare during pumpkin season! Made with fresh pumpkins, this smooth, naturally sweet puree is perfect for pumpkin pies, muffins, breads, pancakes, soups, and countless delicious fall desserts.

Roasting fresh pumpkins brings out their natural sweetness and creates a beautiful golden-orange puree with a rich flavor. The best part? You can prepare a large batch and freeze it in convenient portions to enjoy throughout the year.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 50–70 minutes
Total Time: Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes
Yield: Depends on the size of your pumpkins

Ingredients

  • 2–3 medium sugar pumpkins or pie pumpkins
  • Water, as needed
  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Choose and Wash the Pumpkins

Select fresh, mature pumpkins with firm skin and no soft spots.

Small sugar pumpkins or pie pumpkins are ideal because they generally have sweeter flesh and a smoother texture.

Wash the outside thoroughly under running water and dry with a clean kitchen towel.

Step 2: Cut the Pumpkins

Place each pumpkin on a sturdy cutting board.

Using a sharp knife, carefully cut it in half from top to bottom.

Remove the seeds and stringy fibers using a large spoon.

You can save the pumpkin seeds for roasting later!

Step 3: Prepare the Baking Tray

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Line a large baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Arrange the pumpkin halves cut-side down on the tray.

Step 4: Roast the Pumpkins

Place the tray in the preheated oven.

Bake for approximately 50–70 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of the pumpkins.

The pumpkin is ready when a fork easily slides through the flesh.

Allow larger pumpkins additional cooking time if necessary.

Step 5: Remove the Pumpkin Flesh

Remove the tray from the oven and allow the pumpkins to cool until comfortable to handle.

Using a spoon, scoop the soft orange flesh away from the skin.

Discard the skins.

Transfer the cooked pumpkin flesh into a large mixing bowl.

Step 6: Blend Until Smooth

Place the cooked pumpkin flesh into a food processor or blender.

Blend until completely smooth and creamy.

If the puree is too thick to blend, add a very small amount of water.

Avoid adding too much liquid because pumpkin naturally contains moisture.

Step 7: Adjust the Texture

If your puree seems watery, transfer it to a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth.

Allow excess liquid to drain until you achieve your preferred consistency.

This is especially helpful when preparing pumpkin puree for baking.

Step 8: Cool the Pumpkin Puree
