I stopped for a woman dying on the roadside and lost my job for being late, but when I came back for my desk, my whole life changed

*”To the merger, gentlemen!”

* Nick roared, followed by the clinking of crystal champagne flutes:

*”To the acquisition of Vanguard Creative Group by The Holbrook-Vance Syndicate!”Death & Tragedy

*

*”With Sebastian Miller removed from the operational registry, our intellectual property conveyance is complete!

We sign the master asset transfer at twelve o’clock, and the wire from Zurich clears the clearinghouse before the banks close!”

I picked up the titanium key.

I picked up the broken frame of my family.

I walked down the central hallway of the agency.

I didn’t knock on the frosted glass.

I drove my right Red Wing boot directly into the center seam of the double mahogany doors with two hundred pounds of linear kinetic force:

*KABOOM.

*

The heavy glass doors did not swing open; the brass latch sheared clean out of the jamb, the two panels slamming inward against the drywall stops with concussive, deafening violence:

*CRASH.

*

The ten men sitting around the thirty-foot slab of polished old-growth walnut leaped out of their leather swivel chairs as if a high-explosive mortar shell had breached the ceiling.

Champagne flutes shattered across the mahogany; crystal ice buckets overturned, spilling chilled Dom Pérignon and ice cubes across four hundred pages of legal acquisition contracts:Chemistry

“WHAT THE HELL?!”

Nick Sterling shrieked, backing toward the panoramic window, his bespoke sports coat catching on the arm of his executive chair:

“SECURITY!

CALL THE POLICE!

SEBASTIAN IS ARMED!”

Carter Holbrook did not scream.

The sixty-two-year-old billionaire sat at the head of the conference table, his gold pen frozen half an inch above the signature line of the master merger agreement.

His eyes did not look at my face.

They looked at my right hand.

Where the titanium transponder key was held between my fingers, its cryptographic LED beacon pulsing with a steady, rhythmic, blood-red sixty-cycle heartbeat against my knuckles.

Carter stopped breathing.

His pupils dilated until the pale blue of his irises vanished completely into black.

His jaw dropped open, a string of gray saliva hanging from his lip, his manicured hands beginning to shake with a violent, spastic palsy that rattled his platinum Patek Philippe against the mahogany table:

*tick-tick-tick-tick.

*

“The… the key…” Carter whispered.

The word was paper-thin.Pants

It was the dry, whistling rasp of an ancient mechanical pump seizing from lack of hydraulic oil:

“The Sovereign Key… where did you get that key?!”

I walked into the center of the boardroom.
