PART 2 — “MOM, DO YOU KNOW WHO SHE IS?”
Adrian’s voice echoed through the dining room.
“Mom, do you know who she is?”
Veronica stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Adrian looked at me, and for the first time since the guests arrived, there was something in his eyes I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear of me.
Fear for me.
He stepped between his mother and me.
“She isn’t some woman who married me for money.”
Veronica scoffed. “Then who is she?”
Adrian swallowed.
“She is the reason this family still has a business.”
The room fell silent.
I frowned.
“What?”
Adrian turned toward me.
“There’s something I should have told you before we got married.”
His mother suddenly stood.
“Adrian, stop.”
“No, Mom.”
He looked at the eleven relatives surrounding the overturned table.
“She deserves to know.”
Veronica’s face had gone pale.
Adrian continued.
“Three years ago, our company was nearly destroyed by a financial investigation. Millions of dollars were missing from several accounts. Everyone thought it was an internal accounting problem.”
He looked at me.
“But she was the person who discovered where the money had gone.”
I stared at him.
“I don’t understand.”
“You weren’t supposed to know about it,” Veronica whispered.
Adrian shook his head.
“You were the only person outside the company who could have exposed everything.”
My heart began pounding.
“What are you saying?”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
“I met you because I was investigating what happened.”
My mouth fell open.
“So our marriage…”
“No,” he said quickly. “The marriage was real.”
He took a step toward me.
“I fell in love with you before I knew what you had.”
“What do I have?”
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
I recognized the document behind it immediately.
It was a copy of an old financial report from the company I had worked with years earlier.
At the bottom was my signature.
Veronica rushed toward him.
“Give me that!”
Adrian pulled it away.
“No.”
His mother froze.
Then I understood.
The strange questions she’d asked me.
The insistence that I stop working.
The demand that I combine my property with Adrian’s finances.
They weren’t trying to control me because I was the new wife.
They were trying to make sure I couldn’t expose them.
I looked at Veronica.
“You knew.”
She said nothing.
One of the uncles slowly stood.
“Veronica, what have you done?”
She turned on him.
“Don’t pretend you didn’t know!”
The room erupted.
People began accusing one another.
Adrian grabbed my hand.
“There’s one more thing.”
He pulled out his phone.
“I recorded the entire meeting.”
Everyone stopped talking.
His mother stared at him in disbelief.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“I already did.”
He pressed play.
Her voice filled the room.
“Any inheritance, investments, or property she possesses should be consolidated with Adrian’s finances.”
Then another recording.
“Women become arrogant when they marry money.”
Then the final recording.
Her voice, clear as day:
“She needs to understand her place before she learns too much.”
Veronica’s face collapsed.
The relatives stared at her.
I looked at Adrian.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted to protect you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I know.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“And I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to earn your forgiveness.”
I looked down at the shredded wedding photograph scattered across the floor.
Three days into my marriage, I had already discovered the truth about the family I had married into.
But there was still one question.
I picked up the photograph pieces.
“Adrian?”
“Yes?”
“Who is the woman in this picture?”
He looked at the torn photograph.
His expression changed instantly.
“That…”
He went silent.
I held up the remaining piece.
A woman stood behind Veronica in the original photograph.
I had never seen her before.
But Adrian had.
His face turned completely white.
“That woman,” he whispered, “was supposed to be dead.”
Everyone in the room froze.
Then the front doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
And a woman’s voice came from outside.
“Adrian?”
Veronica backed away from the door.
Adrian stared at me.
Then he whispered:
“Don’t open it.”
