Snake Bite: What to Do Immediately and the First Steps That Could Save Your Life

  • by

A snake bite can be frightening, especially when you do not know whether the snake is venomous. However, staying as calm as possible and getting emergency medical care quickly are essential.

Some snake bites inject venom, while others cause local injury without envenomation. Unfortunately, you cannot reliably determine whether a snake is venomous by looking at the bite marks alone. The number of punctures, their spacing, and the amount of swelling are not reliable ways to identify a dangerous bite.

Knowing what to do — and what to avoid — can make a critical difference.

1. Move Away From the Snake

After a snake bite, move away from the animal to prevent another bite. Do not attempt to catch, kill, or handle the snake.

If you can observe its appearance from a safe distance, you may remember its color, pattern, or size for medical professionals. However, do not delay treatment to take a photograph.

Even a snake that appears dead may still bite reflexively.

2. Call Emergency Services Immediately

Treat any suspected snake bite as a medical emergency, particularly when the species is unknown.

Call your local emergency number or arrange urgent transport to an emergency department. If the snake may be venomous, prompt assessment is essential even if the bite initially seems painless or causes few visible symptoms.

Some serious effects can develop before the person realizes how dangerous the bite is.

3. Keep the Person Still
